Chapter Nine

As far as questions went, this one was likely the least pressing. And yet, it was all Rose had been able to think about these past few hours as she’d hidden in Sarah’s room with Camilla and Aubrey.

Poor Sarah was still unable to be on her injured ankle, and the girls had hoped to keep her company.

Though Rose was fairly certain she’d made a terrible companion. Aubrey had tried to get her to explain what had upset her so, but she’d only shaken her head and murmured something about silly romantic notions.

Let her friends make of that what they would. She’d had other matters to sort through, and her own ridiculous fascination with a love poem that wasn’t meant for her was hardly the priority.

The whole maypole business was best left forgotten. Wishes were for the lucky. How many times did she have to remind herself of that?

“Er, well, you see…” His expression was pained.

“Yes, very enlightening,” she murmured. Was it kind? Perhaps not. But after his ridiculous antics this afternoon, she wasn’t feeling particularly kind. Nor patient. “Lord Thornton, in an attempt to be as transparent as possible, let me assure you that I have no interest in you in that sense.”

His mouth clamped shut, and his stern scowl was back in place. Oddly, she found that to be easier to deal with. Hints of regret and that shocking vulnerability when he tried to speak of emotions? That was far more disturbing. It made him seem like...well, like a man, rather than a burly, insensitive beast, as she’d come to think of him.

“As I’m sure you’re aware, I must marry soon and I must marry well.” The reminder of his comment only the day before, warning her away from his friend as though she were some wayward vixen set on seducing any man with more than a pound to his name had her spine straightening again.

Good. Anger was good. She’d long since gotten over the loss of that silly love poem, but if she wished to make it through the rest of this house party without disgracing her good name and harming her chances to save her family, then it was imperative that she be brutally blunt.

“I am well aware that you are not an option, just as I am clear that your friend Mr. Harlow would not be suitable, either.” She drew in a deep breath, ignoring the concerned stares coming from the other side of the room, and focusing solely on the man before her. “As you must also know, the only reason I met with you this morning was at your request. And the love poem I was attempting to give you was yours.”

His eyes narrowed. “A love poem,” he murmured. “I wasn’t expecting that.”

She frowned, and she could only wish that her scowl was as terrifying as his. “Earlier I might have said that this was not my business, but as I am currently the topic of gossip, I now believe it is, so I must ask you, Lord Thornton.
